The  windows are designed  to  provide  for  e x em plar y insulating capability,  while the south  facing   windo ws are  chosen  to allow  for  passive thermal gain.  A  solar thermal  hot  water  system  and photovoltaic  solar   panels are  set on the  roof,   providing  hot  water and  electr icity , for both   heating and powering  the  home.  Due to  t he extraordinary insulation,  the minimal heat   required  t o warm  the  home,  even  during  the  coldest Maine  wint ers, allows  for the  use of  a  mini-split  f orced  air heat   syst em, which will also   provides  air  conditioning  during   t he summer   mont hs.
